Softwood is a type of wood that is cut from trees that belong to the gymnosperms group, such as conifers. In contrast, hardwoods typically come from angiosperms, deciduous and broadleaf trees. Trees that lose their leaves in autumn, such as oaks.
Softwood trees like fir keep their leaves year-round and grow faster than hardwoods.
Unlike hardwoods, the microstructure of softwood trees does not include blood vessels because their cells are open. This allows them to act as conduits, delivering nutrients and water through the tree. These open cells allow them to better absorb things like adhesives and finishes.
Cork makes up about 80% of all wood and is usually supplied in rectangular forms such as planks, posts and railings. Cork is commonly used in construction, roof and interior wall structures, and other building components such as fixtures and fittings, doors, etc. It is also the main component of some wood-based panels, such as MDF.
Hardwoods are commonly used in furniture such as tables, chairs, chests of drawers, etc. It can also be used in applications such as window frames.
Softwoods are generally less dense, although some softwoods are harder than hardwoods (for example, balsa is a hardwood). This makes sawing, planing, drilling, nailing, and more easier.
